Italian pianist Luca Sguera’s AKA
Back with a 3-track EP on Auand Records
Coherent, imaginative, contemporary, never indulging in free improvisation mannerism. In short... a recognizable style and a clear approach, ranging from impressionist moments to avant-garde unisons! (Paolo Angeli)
This album was recorded in June 2019 in Berlin, where Luca Sguera (piano, Rhodes, compositions) was living at that time. Francesco Panconesi (tenor sax), Alessandro Mazzieri (bass and electronics) and Carmine Casciello (drums) joined him, experiencing a week together and recording this music, which lives and breathes the energy they shared and created in those days.
The fresh, straightforward writing in all three tracks supports and guides the improvisation, creating moods that can be firm and subtle at the same time. The music portrays a contemporary jazz open to new languages and filled with sophisticated use of electronics (“May 23rd”) and ever-changing explosive perspectives (“Arp”) amplified by both primordial and futuristic timbers. Sguera’s approach, which also informed the previous album (“AKA”, Auand, February 2019), is now more refined, evolving towards new, essential shape.
Similarly to the previous album (in which compositions and improvised pieces alternated in an organic way), the tracklist also includes the freely improvised track “Io ho l'impermeabile, tu le ali” (“I have the raincoat, you have the wings”), whose title comes from a poem by Italian writer Chandra Livia Candiani, and which apparently investigates the opposite method: improvising a composition.
Luca Sguera (1992, Milan, Italy) is a piano player, composer and improviser.
Besides improvisation he investigates
composition as layering of signs and meanings, through a practice in which rhythm and timbre play a main role.
He is active in several projects (AKA, She's Analog) with which he released records (Aut, Auand) and performed in festivals and clubs among Italy and Europe....more
